Unfortunately, this is my second week of not being able to mentor which is kind of depressing because I miss all the cute little faces of my students. So instead I’d like to talk about one of my many passions, which is reading!

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.” - Dr. Seuss, I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!

This is one of my favorite Dr. Seuss quotes and explains one of the many reasons that I believe reading is so important! Reading allows you to learn so much, whether it is fiction or non-fiction, and the knowledge that you gain is what gives you the inspiration to go where you want to go! As my parents always said, “Reading makes you smarter!” Of course my young self ignored them but I now realize it is the complete truth. Reading can help you in so many ways. It develops your imagination, improves your vocabulary and memory, as well as providing a great source of entertainment! I read an online article called, Why to Read: 10 Reasons Why Reading Books Will Save Your Life, it is a great little summary of why reading is so important and I completely agree with it! Moreover, what I love the most is that reading comes in all shapes and sizes! There are so many different sources for reading, it doesn’t have to be a book! You can read magazines, newspapers, plays, poems, ebooks, and more! You can also find something to read on any subject imaginable, so don’t be discouraged if you’re having trouble finding your genre!

Furthermore, I think teachers are encouraging students to read all the time! At my mentor site, Mrs. Zawisza is always asking her kids to read aloud and sound out their words if they have trouble. They also have library books they get to take home every week! For children especially is it so important for them to to learn how to read, and is something I will always emphasize for my future students. Additionally, even at my high school on the announcements there is a video section of one of the English teachers talking about a new book of the week that students should read! I also remember my freshman and sophomore year, Fridays in English class were dedicated to reading a book of your choice. That was always my favorite class that day, and was a good stress relief from the day! All in all, reading is an amazing and important thing that is so good for you in many ways!

My challenge for you is to ask someone about a good book they have read or to tell someone about a favorite book of yours! Spreading the word is a great way for people to find books that they may like!
